Sylvia Austin began her obsession with the visual arts in the darkroom of her childhood home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Following her early interest in photography, she moved to New York to study at the School of Visual Arts.
She is known for her soft, intimate, naturalistic style of photography and strong portrayal of women. Her photographs occupy a realm between the past and the present, resulting in imagery that is at once progressive and familiar.
Having started her career shooting landscapes before transitioning to fashion, she enjoys bringing nature indoors, once placing turtles on a pair of Givenchy boots. Sylvia has cultivated a distinctive voice shooting editorial stories for publications such as Nicotine, Teeth, and SSENSE and working with musicians Jorja Smith, Alison Sudol, and Empress Of.
Her signature style fuses analogue photography with a unique lighting style and captures the character of the subjects she finds. Combing existing natural light with hot lights, Sylvia likes obstructing the light with objects found from the set or different types of fabrics such as chiffon or velvet. Her exploration of color, shapes, and organic sculptures has solidified her unique presence in fashion and landscape photography.
Outside the studio, Sylvia likes gardening, trekking, and holistic healing. She currently lives and works in New York City.
